What causes tooth sensitivity?
Sensitive teeth can have several causes, but are the most common cause is receding gums. When gums recede, small openings in the tooth called dentin tubules are exposed. These tubules lead directly to the nerve of the tooth and can cause pain. Your dentist and dental hygienist will guide you in the best direction, and find a treatment plan that will help with sensitive teeth. Often, a good plan for gum care is an important part of the process.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is swelling or soreness of the gums (the soft tissue) around the teeth. It is caused by the bacteria in plaque. The plaque bacteria have toxins that inflame the gums. Sometimes, gum disease is caused when plaque isn’t adequately removed by brushing and flossing your teeth. However, as many as 30% of people develop gum disease, regardless of how carefully they brush and floss. Left untreated, these pockets of bacterial and germs can lead to bone and tooth loss, as well as impacting your overall health. We’ll help you achieve the healthiest gums possible.
Why is it important to see the dentist and dental hygienist regularly?
Simply put, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Having your teeth cleaned every six months is the very best way to keep teeth and gums healthy and strong. You can’t always see the signs of gum disease or tooth decay until it’s too late. We’ll also check you – every time – for oral cancer and other dental/oral issues. It’s something you need to do for yourself.
